examine the evidence, interview the witnesses, prepare the indictments and instruct the Attorney General throu- gh the trial.

The 1899 cases included the no- torious Un Loong Murder trials, and the charges of per- jury and subornation of perjury arising out of them, which occupied the Court for the best part of two months, and also numerous armed robberies from the New Territories, the inclusion of which under British Juris- diction has greatly increased thework of all officers who have to deal with Criminal Procedure.
10. In addition to Criminal cases an increasing number of Police Court cases are annually conducted for the Crown by the Crown Solicitor.
11. The Work of collecting arrears
of Crown rent, Village Rents, Rates, Pier Rents, Govern- ment Civil Hospital fees and numerous other miscellan- eous fees from defaulters falls upon the Crown Solici- tor and as the number of Lots and tenements rapidly in- creases the average of defaulters, naturally increases at the same time.
During the year 1899, 160 Suits were prosecuted against defaulters in the Summary Court by myself and my predecessor Mr.Dennys.
12. In addition to the Court work,
a large and ever increasing amount of office work is thrown upon the Crown Solicitor in preparing Leases, Contracts, Ronds, and numerous other documents for Gov- ernment, and in advising on questions of all sorts:and in this connection I may mention that the officers of the Sanitary Board have special permission to corres- pond with and consult the Crown Solicitor without pasS- ing the papers through the C.S.0., a permission of
